Home Care
Keeping Your Smile on Track Between Visits
Whether you’re wearing aligners, braces, or retainers, great results start with great home care. At Eggemeyer & Graham Orthodontics, we’ll always guide you through what to expect at each stage of treatment—but what you do between visits makes a big difference, too.
Use the tips below to keep your appliance clean, functional, and effective. And remember: if you’re ever unsure about something or something breaks, just give us a call—we’re here to help!
Braces
Braces are strong and effective, but they also need a little extra attention to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.
Here are our top tips for taking care of your braces:
- Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily with floss threaders or orthodontic floss to clean between teeth and around brackets
- Use an interdental brush or water flosser to clean under wires and around appliances
- Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods like gum, popcorn, ice, and nuts—they can damage brackets or wires
- If a bracket or wire becomes loose or broken, contact us—we’ll walk you through next steps
- Wear rubber bands and any prescribed appliances as instructed—consistency is key!
We’ll go over home care techniques at your appointments, and we’re always happy to show you again if you need a refresher.
Aligners
Clear aligners like Invisalign and 3M Solventum Clarity are a popular choice for their convenience and appearance—but they still require daily care to stay fresh and effective.
Here’s how to care for your aligners at home:
- Wear them 20–22 hours a day for best results
- Remove before eating or drinking anything but water
- Brush your aligners gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented liquid soap
- Avoid using toothpaste, as it can scratch and cloud the plastic
- Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water—never hot, which can warp them
- Store your aligners in their case when not in use to avoid loss or damage
- Clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in to prevent bacteria buildup
Stick to your schedule, keep your aligners clean, and don’t skip sets. If you lose or damage an aligner, let us know right away so we can keep your treatment on track.
Retainers
Your retainers are the final step in protecting all the progress you’ve made during treatment. Taking care of them is essential to keeping your smile straight and your bite stable.
Here’s how to care for your retainers:
- Wear them exactly as prescribed, especially in the first months after treatment
- Clean retainers daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or a retainer-specific cleaner
- Never use hot water—it can warp the material
- Avoid wrapping retainers in napkins or tissues—they’re easy to accidentally throw away
- Always store your retainers in their case when not in use
- Keep them away from pets—they love to chew on them!
If your retainers feel tight, become damaged, or stop fitting properly, call our office so we can assess and adjust as needed. Wearing and caring for your retainers is the best way to make sure your new smile lasts a lifetime.
