Braces Care
Brush and Flossing with Braces
Maintenance
Maintaining proper oral hygiene is always important, but becomes even more critical while wearing dental braces. Braces have spaces where food particles can be trapped allowing plaque to develop. Consistent and effective techniques can easily prevent any decay or staining. Here are some tips:
- Make sure to brush your teeth after each meal with fluoride toothpaste. Food can collect very easily around braces, so it needs to be removed frequently.
- Rinse thoroughly and check your teeth to make sure there is no food stuck in your braces.
- Take the time to floss between braces and under wires, using a floss threader if needed.
- Proper brushing takes time. Avoid rushing, and ensure that all areas and corners are brushed.
- Visit the dentist to have your teeth cleaned every six months.
Proper Brushing with Braces
- Remove all appliances and elastics before brushing.
- Use your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean around the wires and brackets. Brush thoroughly from the top of the wire, then from the bottom. Check as you go to make sure that all debris is removed. Be sure to focus your brushing along the gum line.
- Concentrate on only a few teeth at a time. Brush in a circular motion from the top, bottom, and middle, toward and between the wires and brackets. Be gentle when brushing the tooth and gums to prevent damaging gum tissue.
